The Year Starts With Winter

 We saw the first snow of the year in Dumfries on Tuesday. A good couple of inches to convince us that our Scottish winter hasn’t totally succumbed to global warming just yet.


Then, on Wednesday, we awoke to a world where the snow had melted away and been replaced with ice.


However both days were a gift to the photographer. The sun was low but bright and the golden hour lasted all day.

Just Missed the Sunshine

 I decided to take a short camping trip in Glentrool last week. It seemed like a good idea at the time as we'd had several weeks of unseasonally warm weather. Inevitably, the rain started in earnest as soon as I pitched my tent. However, that didn't spoil the fun as rain and the Scottish landscape can set each other off beautifully. I took a lot of images of rivers in full spate and probably have some of my best turbulent water shots from that trip.

A Sad Month

The family illness that has been overshadowing the start of this year has ended but not as we had hoped. My dear wife, Ann, finally succumbed to the brain cancer she has been living with since October 2020. It's been a very sad time but there has been a lot of love coming from all of the people Ann touched throughout her life. A gentle supportive soul, she reaped much more love than she sowed. It has been a mixed time for me and my family, suffering the loss of Ann and sorrowing for her and the early loss of her life, but having the support of so many lovely people.

Being a Proud Parent

Last night I had the full experience of being a proud parent. After a decade of sending him to keyboard lessons, encouraging him to participate in music at school and the school youth jazz orchestra, encouraging him to university to study popular music, not panicking too much when he decided to go to Ghana to study the local music, our son has managed to develop a career as a professional musician.  Last night was the icing on the cake as Simon and his friends Luke and Gavin took to the stage for the first time with their long-developed project Sekoya. They played to a packed venue in the bar of the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh to a wildly enthusiastic crowd and delivered a set of self-penned fiendishly complex jazz. It was a triumph.
