R.I.P. Carrie Rigby Toner 29th September 1936 to 3rd November 2025

 You do get some tough years and two bereavements in one year is enough to qualify. There have been some very good things this year too but they sit in the shadow of loss. My mum passed away, just worn out late one wet November night. We look back on a very full and rich life and remember her.

Carrie’s 21st Birthday

Andrew Robertson

Each birthday is a little rung

On the ladder you must climb,

On this one – number 21

You’ve reached a height sublime.

Your Girlhood you have left behind

To Womanhood you’ve come,

Dame Fortune keep you e’er in mind

Throughout the years to come.

Should troubles grip you in their vice

Or problems make you sad,

Don’t hesitate to seek advice

From dear old Mum and Dad.

Be ever righteous in your ways

Your thoughts be good and true,

May friends surround you all your days

– this is our wish for you.

Mum and Dad.

(Love and all good wishes to our baby on her 21st Birthday – xxx.)

Carrie

The strong, guiding voice of our childhood:

Gentle - with germoline -  when the ground proved too hard

And rough for young knees and elbows;

Generous and laughing on birthdays and Christmases;

Quiet and wise during the difficult times;

Always there when most needed.

Liberating her boys

With lessons in sewing and baking -

Knitting and crochet, alas, a bridge too far.

Books and films shared, the sci fi queen;

Meals out and holidays, a small, dapper, active woman,

Always her very own person.

Entertainer of grandchildren,

A double act with dear Peter

As in all things –

He her only love and faithful sidekick,

Taken cruelly and far too soon.

In later years, an independent lady,

Still always for family and friends.

Guild trips with Jean, sisters together,

Crossing the country, high on tablet

And good company.

Celebrant of grandchildren’s triumphs,

Their joys hers,

And still strong and determined

Even as the light began to fade

And illness took hold -

Refusing to be diminished,

Her mind still strong,

Her heels dug in hard

Against the cold shove of fate.

Wearying at last, however,

The struggle just too much,

She passed quietly on a rainy Monday evening,

Leaving us for now,

But reuniting with Peter and many others,

The old guard moving on

From a world with too many troubles.

Just Missed the Sunshine

 I decided to take a short camping trip in Glentrool last week. It seemed like a good idea at the time as we'd had several weeks of unseasonally warm weather. Inevitably, the rain started in earnest as soon as I pitched my tent. However, that didn't spoil the fun as rain and the Scottish landscape can set each other off beautifully. I took a lot of images of rivers in full spate and probably have some of my best turbulent water shots from that trip.

Worldcon

This is the last day of the 2024 Worldcon, a gathering of science fiction fans from all around the world which happens to be meeting in Glasgow this year. I've been to a few cons over the years and this one has a special buzz about it. I suppose when people travel thousands of miles to be there they self-select for enthusiasm and there was bucket loads of it in Glasgow this weekend. I started the day with a couple of readings by Ken McLeod. These were delivered in Ken's trademark relaxed and friendly style, a nice gentle start to a Sunday morning. Later, I caught up with my Shoreline of Infinity colleagues at their stall which was doing a roaring trade and I was able to support Noel Chidwick and Pippa Goldschmidt who were launching a new project called SF Caledonia. This is an online showcase of all SF things Scottish and the presentation featured a recorded reading (as John Buchan) by actor Jonathan Whiteside and a live reading from Callum McSorley, 2023 McIlvanney Prize winn...

More Sekoya

 I previously blogged about my son's band Sekoya. On Tuesday this week, they launched their new album Shuna ( you can hear it and get it here ). This time they were in the Rum Shack in the southside of Glasgow, a great wee venue, and they were promoted by Lay Low , the first time they've used a promoter.  A nice sized crowd came along and completely filled the venue and we were treated to some great music and a nice line in commentary and chat from the band. They also specialise in a unique merch table which has no music on it but it does feature tea, calligraphy and paper plates. They're an arty band.
